About Wits

The University of the Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits, is a leading South African research-intensive university located in Johannesburg, Gauteng. Founded in 1922, Wits has grown into one of Africa's foremost centres of academic excellence, producing graduates who go on to lead in fields ranging from medicine and engineering to law, commerce, and the arts. Wits is home to more than 40,000 students and offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across five faculties: Commerce, Law and Management; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; and Science. The university is internationally recognised for its research output and is consistently ranked among the top universities in Africa and the world. The university's Johannesburg campus spans over 170 hectares in the Braamfontein area and includes world-class facilities such as laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, residences, and a vibrant student hub.
