FEM Bursary applications are open for the 2025 academic year. Applicants have until 25 November 2024 to submit their funding applications. Federal Employee Mutual (FEM) play a vital role in ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of talented and deserving students by offering them financial assistance to further their studies.

What is the FEM Bursary?

The FEM (Federated Employers Mutual) Bursary is a financial aid programme designed to assist deserving South African students in achieving their academic dreams. Sponsored by the Federated Employers Mutual Assurance Company, the bursary aims to empower young individuals by providing the resources needed to complete their studies in fields related to Occupational Health and Safety and other sectors pivotal to economic growth and workplace safety.

Established with the vision of building a skilled and knowledgeable workforce, the FEM Bursary supports students who show academic potential but face financial constraints. By doing so, it contributes to the development of the nation’s future leaders in key areas that enhance workplace safety and drive economic stability. FEM aims to improve the quality of education in South Africa by investing in promising individuals.

 

FIELD OF STUDY

The FEM bursary programme is open to students who are pursuing an undergraduate qualification in the following faculties:

  • Faculty of Engineering and the built environment
  • Faculty of Health Sciences

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FEM BURSARY

To qualify for the FEM bursary you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be studying full-time, towards an undergraduate qualification within the faculty of health sciences or the faculty of engineering and the built environment.
  • You must have completed your first year of study (bursaries will NOT be awarded to first year students and postgraduate students)
  • You must be studying at an accredited public University in South Africa
  • You must have a total household income of NOT more than R380 000 per year
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must NOT have any outstanding fees at your university from previous years
  • You must be in financial need and not able to fund your own studies
  • Preference will be given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds



 FEM BURSARY COVERS THE FOLLOWING EXPENSES:

  • Tuition fees,
  • Textbooks and other study materials
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • A monthly living allowance

NB: Accommodation and meals approval will be determined solely at the discretion of FEM.

 

FEM BURSARY REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Your certified ID Document or birth certificate if you are 16 years old or younger
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate
  • Certified copy of your Full academic record
  • Proof of tertiary registration
  • Detailed CV
  • Certified ID copies of parents or guardian
  • Copy of recent payslip, not older than three months, for each parent (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian. This is for all types of employment or all forms of income for all members of the household.
  • If your parent(s) (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian is retired, please provide a copy of an official pension slip or bank statement showing pension payment.
  • If your parent(s) (Father and/or Mother)/legal guardian works as an informal trader, please provide an affidavit signed by them to confirm this type of employment.
  • If either of your parents is deceased, please provide a certified copy of the death certificate.
  • If either parent(s) (Father and/or Mother) are not present in your life and/or do not financially support you and/or provide any maintenance please provide an affidavit indicating so.
  • If unemployed or have no proof of income, the source of income/maintenance/allowance must be provided per individual by means of an affidavit.
  • If you have indicated that a dependent in your household is a student, please provide proof of registration from their Tertiary Institution.

Take note of the following:

  • All documents must be certified
  • All the certified copies must not be older than 3 months)
  • Your documents can be certified at the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office.

 To apply for the FEM Bursary for 2025, follow the easy steps below:

Step 2: Scroll down and click on the "APPLY" tab

Step 3:  Fill in your personal details 

Step 4: Attach the supporting documents

Step 5: Complete the compulsory questionnaire 

Step 5: Then click on "Submit Application" tab

NB: Should you be shortlisted further, you will receive the FEM bursary application form to complete.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that your application is complete, as incomplete applications will also not be accepted. If you do not get any response from FEM bursary consider your application unsuccessful.
