The Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) is excited to announce its bursary programme for the 2025 academic year, offering financial assistance to South African students across various levels of study. They are inviting both undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for this bursary programme before 20 December 2024.

About the Thapelo Madibeng Bursary:

CETA administers the Thapelo Madibeng Bursary to provide worthy students with the necessary, in-demand skills and academic distinction for the construction and built environment industries. The main goal is to ensure that the construction and built environment sectors have the necessary, capable, and talented workers to take advantage of possibilities both now and in the future. The Thapelo Madibeng bursary is  granted to deserving students pursuing appropriate degrees in construction-related disciplines at South African higher education institutions; University, University of Technology and TVET colleges. 

 

FIELD OF STUDY

The bursary programme is open to students who are pursuing or want to pursue undergraduate/postgraduate qualification in the following fields:

 University Qualifications:

  • BSc/national diploma/PhD in Architecture
  • BA in Building Arts
  • BSc-PhD in Geomatics
  • BSc - PhD in Urban and Regional Planning
  • BSc Property Development
  • BSc -PhD in Civil Engineering
  • ND Architecture
  • BSC Architecture
  • BSc-PhD in Construction Management
  • BSc -PhD in Quantity Surveying
  • BSc- PhD Construction Economics
  • BSc-PhD in Construction Studies

University of Technology qualifications:

  • ND Real Estate
  • ND Quantity Surveying
  • ND Civil Engineering
  • ND Building
  • ND Surveying

NOTE : Studies in Environmental Management, Climate Change Science, Construction BIM, etc., (at all levels to PhD) will also be funded

Tvet College Qualifications 

  • N4 – N6 Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • N4 -N6 Civil Engineering and Building Construction or equivalent

NOTE: NCV studies will only be considered for the critical and scarce skills areas

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE THAPELO MADIBENG BURSARY

To qualify for the Thapelo Madibeng  Bursary you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have been in Matric in 2023 OR  completed Matric 
  • Undergraduate studies applicants MUST be 35 years or younger
  • Must intend to study / studying a Undergraduate or Postgraduate qualification in or related to the construction industry 
  • Must studying/ registered/accepted at an an accredited South African tertiary institution (including TVETs) 
  • Must NOT be an immediate family member of a CETA employee 
  • Must NOT be funding by any other public funding; including NSFAS.
  • Must NOT funded by any CETA entity

Preference will be given to:

  • Female Applicants interested in a construction or building environment qualification
  • Students from rural and township areas 
  • Unemployed students wanting to pursue studies in the construction and building environment field
  • Strong academic achievement
  • Not currently funded by another identity and is pursuing a qualification within the CRITICAL SKILLS field. 

 

THE THAPELO MADIBENG BURSARY COVERS:

  • Registration 
  • Books
  • Meals
  • Accommodation 
  • Tuition 
  • Additional expenses will be covered at CETA's discretion.

Note: The bursary has a MAXIMUM cap of R120 000 per learner; per year (subject to satisfactory academic achievement) 

 

THAPELO MADIBENG BURSARY REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Certified copy of South African Identity Document.
  • Certified copy of guardian/parents’ proof of income OR social grant/pension; Last three pay slips, Last three months bank approved statements OR affidavit if unemployed.
  •  Letter of acceptance from the tertiary institution.
  • Complete academic history for students already studying at University or University of Technology or TVET College; including Matric certificate.
  • Applicants who were in  matric in the 2024 academic year must submit their grade 11 final and grade 12 in-year academic results.
