The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in partnership with the Eastcape Midlands TVET College, has announced an exciting skills development initiative for 2026. A total of 30 Battery Based Domestic Energy System Mounter positions are now open for training under a specialised five-month skills programme designed to meet growing demand in the renewable energy sector.

Closing Date: 09 March 2026

This initiative is part of the TVET Capacity Development for Just Transition, Employment Promotion Projects and Green Qualification programme, implemented on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) by the GFA Consulting Group, in collaboration with EWSETA and Eastcape Midlands TVET College.

Programme Overview: What You Need to Know

The new programme, officially coded SP 250112 – Battery Based Domestic Energy System Mounter (NQF Level 4, 60 credits), aims to equip learners with practical skills in installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining domestic battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar energy components. The training period runs for five months, after which successful learners will receive a recognised skills qualification.

These systems are increasingly important in South Africa, particularly in rural areas and domestic environments where low-voltage battery energy storage units help to manage energy supply amid ongoing load shedding challenges.

Who Should Apply? Minimum Entry Requirements

This programme is open to candidates who meet the following entry requirements:

  • Certified copy of a minimum NQF Level 4 qualification in renewable energy technology

  • Grade 12 qualification with Technical or Pure Mathematics

  • Proof of residential address within the Nelson Mandela Bay District

  • Certified South African ID document

  • Certified copy of next of kin ID

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae

Applicants with prior training or experience in electrical work and the renewable energy sector will be given preference, especially those who have already worked with or studied related technologies.

The requirements have been crafted to ensure that learners have foundational knowledge and readiness to undertake intensive technical training. This also supports entry into a high-growth field where practical skills are in demand.

Training Benefits and Structure

Seats are limited to only 30 learners, making this an exclusive opportunity for those eager to fast-track their entry into the renewable energy workforce. Training includes the installation, maintenance, safe operation, and troubleshooting of battery energy storage systems used in domestic settings.

Key skills learners will gain include:

  • Mounting domestic battery energy storage DC systems and solar panels

  • Maintaining and servicing battery energy storage systems

  • Identifying and replacing faulty system components

  • Providing basic user training on system operation

  • Conducting simple administrative and business tasks related to small technical businesses

The programme not only focuses on technical abilities but also incorporates basic entrepreneurial skills that enable graduates to start their own small businesses or provide services as independent contractors.

Stipend Support for Unemployed Learners

One of the most notable components of this initiative is the financial support offered to unemployed learners. Those selected for the training will receive a monthly stipend for the duration of the programme. This stipend is intended to help cover learners’ daily expenses; however, participants are expected to manage their own transport and accommodation costs, as no additional funding is provided for these.

While the stipend will not completely cover living expenses, this support is a significant step toward making skills training more accessible to young people and adults who may not otherwise afford it.

What This Means for the Local Economy

As South Africa continues to expand its reliance on renewable energy technologies and off-grid solutions, trained technicians are increasingly in demand. Domestic energy storage systems — especially those under 50V DC — are becoming essential components for households seeking energy independence and solutions to persistent power outages.

This training initiative will:

  • Develop a skilled technical workforce in the renewable energy sector

  • Support local employment and entrepreneurship

  • Enhance energy resilience in communities

  • Contribute to national goals for a Just Energy Transition

By targeting individuals within the Nelson Mandela Bay District, the programme is tailored to strengthen skills right where they are most needed, helping bridge both labour market and skills gaps.
