The university was founded in 2005, through the merger of two longstanding institutions, the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth Technikon. It has since grown into a comprehensive university with six faculties: Arts, Business and Economic Sciences, Education, Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, Health Sciences, Law and Science
